What actually happens to the plastic when you buy a bottle of The Hidden Sea?
Plastic Free July is a good reminder. But for us, it's every month.
Every bottle of The Hidden Sea sold removes the equivalent weight of 10 plastic bottles from the ocean. That's the promise. But we get asked a fair bit: what actually happens to it?
Here's the honest answer.
Where it comes from
We partner with 4ocean, an ocean cleanup organisation that runs full-time crews across oceans, rivers, and coastlines seven days a week. They're not volunteers picking up beach litter on weekends. They're professional captains and crews, employed full-time, with vessels and equipment, operating in some of the world's most plastic-affected waterways.
What happens after it's pulled out
The recovered plastic is taken back to local processing facilities where it's weighed, documented, washed, and sorted by type and colour. From there:
-
Some is recycled directly into raw material for other manufacturers, displacing the need for virgin plastic
-
Some is turned into 4ocean's own products. Their bracelet cords and other merchandise are made from recovered ocean plastic
-
Plastics that are harder to recycle may be extruded into durable goods like plastic lumber
-
When recycling isn't possible, materials go to waste-to-energy facilities. 4ocean partners with the Solid Waste Authority in West Palm Beach, Florida, where recovered waste is converted into energy that powers thousands of homes and businesses
-
As a genuine last resort, when all other options are exhausted, some material is responsibly landfilled
It's not a perfect system. No plastic recovery operation is. But it's transparent, third-party verified, and it means that every bottle you drink is doing something real.
Why we built the brand around this
The Hidden Sea started with an origin story most wine brands can't claim. Our vineyards sit on the Limestone Coast of South Australia, once covered by an ancient ocean that receded 26 million years ago. We found whale bones under the vineyard. The sea is literally in our soil.
That history gave us a responsibility. You can't build a wine brand on ocean heritage and not care about the ocean that still exists. So we made removing ocean plastic part of the business model, not a charity afterthought.
Stock up and make it count
For a limited time only, we're running a Stocktake Sale - six-packs for $99 plus free shipping. Every bottle in that case removes 10 plastic bottles from the ocean. That's 60 plastic bottles gone for the price of a good night in.
